Welcome to Longwood Highschool‘s Breaking the Ban…
a student-led organization that acknowledges, celebrates, and educates diversity, while striving to cultivate a community that fights and discards censorship while encouraging freedom of speech and expression as well as equal representation.
Through a shared passion of reading, access to information, and equal opportunities for all students in communities, we fight an ongoing battle against censorship and exclusion in schools. We aim to provide a supportive, inclusive, safe, and equitable environment for all groups of students.
In the wake of Governor DeSantis’s bills such as “Don’t Say Gay” and “Stop W.O.K.E. Act,” it is important, now more than ever, to come together and not only celebrate our differences, but also ensure we do not erase history and forget our struggles. As the future generation, we fight to ensure that we have equitable access to all information that is free of censorship, biases, and erasures.
We fight to create a bibliophilic community that is free of censorship.
“In truth, every student has a right to have their own life stories reflected back at them and every student benefits from stories that serve as a window into the lives of people different from them. Censorship and homogeneity benefit no one while denying all students an equal chance to learn, grow and thrive.” – Gillian Branstetter, Communications Strategist at the ACLU’s Women’s Rights Project and LGBTQ & HIV Project.
